Spirit Over Water

The phrase “Spirit Over Water” begins in the creation story. “The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.” (Genesis‬ ‭1:2‬) God spoke light, life, land, and all of creation into these waters. We believe that when God speaks, He brings shape to the formless, and when we listen, He does this in our hearts. We also see the Spirit move over the surface of the waters in the form of a dove: “When He had been baptized, Jesus came up immediately from the water; and behold, the heavens were opened to Him, and He saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting upon Him.” (Matthew 3:16) Mirroring the Genesis story, God begins a great transformation through Jesus in the lives of people around Him, the dove landing as a sign to everyone confirming that He was the promised Savior.
